# Vertically Integrated Manufacturing: Keep It Under One Roof

![Vertically Integrated Manufacturing](https://blog.weberknapp.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Vertically%20Integrated%20Manufacturing.jpg?width=1253&height=836&name=Vertically%20Integrated%20Manufacturing.jpg)

Managing multiple manufacturing suppliers can feel like a job all its own. One vendor is waiting on another, timelines start shifting, and suddenly you’re spending far too much time figuring out who has your part.

**Vertically integrated manufacturing** can cut down on that back-and-forth by keeping more of the work with one manufacturing partner. With multiple capabilities under one roof, there are fewer handoffs to manage and a much shorter list of people to chase down.

Your inbox will probably appreciate it, too.

## What Does Vertically Integrated Manufacturing Mean?

**Vertically integrated manufacturing** means one manufacturer handles multiple stages of production within its own operation. Instead of sending a product between several outside suppliers, more of the work stays with one manufacturing partner.

For an OEM, that can reduce the number of handoffs required to get a product through production. Communication becomes simpler when fewer outside vendors are involved, especially when a design change or production issue comes up.

The result is a more connected manufacturing process, with one partner responsible for a larger portion of the work.

## What Does Vertically Integrated Manufacturing Look Like?

Eleven manufacturing operations for one product sounds like the beginning of a very long vendor spreadsheet.

It doesn’t have to be.

Nearly all of our manufacturing processes are performed in-house, which gives a product room to have a pretty busy itinerary without sending it all over town.

A blood-draw tablet manufactured for **KNU Comfort, associated with La-Z-Boy Health Care**, went through 11 different operations during production. It’s a useful example of just how much can happen between the initial material and the finished product.

The blood-draw tablet required:

- Routing
- [Laser cutting](https://blog.weberknapp.com/cnc-fiber-laser-cutting-machines-considerations-for-manufacturing)
- Press brake forming
- Turning
- Machining, including countersinking and reaming
- [Powder coating](https://blog.weberknapp.com/industrial-powder-coating-services)
- Riveting
- Robotic welding
- Vibratory de-burring
- Plating
- Assembly

That list shows why manufacturing a finished product can become complicated quickly. A part needs to be cut before it can be formed. Other components may need machining. Finishing and assembly come later in the process.

Spread those operations across several suppliers, and every move between them becomes another handoff to coordinate with more shipping expenses. Keep several processes within the same manufacturing operation, and the product can continue moving through production without leaving for another vendor at every turn.

### “Who Does What?” Gets a Shorter Answer

When manufacturing is split among several suppliers, someone has to keep track of where the work is and what happens next. The longer the process gets, the more moving pieces there are to follow.

[Fully integrated manufacturing](https://blog.weberknapp.com/full-service-manufacturing-mechanical-motion-control) puts more of those steps within the same operation. That doesn't mean every product needs every capability available under one roof. A much simpler component may only pass through a few departments.

## What Changes When Fewer Vendors Are Involved?

Every outside supplier creates a handoff. That isn’t automatically a problem, but each handoff adds another place where schedules and information have to line up.

When several manufacturing processes happen within one operation, those handoffs look different.

### There Are Fewer Schedules to Chase

Coordinating several suppliers means keeping tabs on [several production schedules](https://www.nist.gov/mep/supply-chain). And every time a product leaves one supplier for another, there’s another handoff to manage.

That can mean keeping track of:

- When one supplier finishes its work
- When the product is ready to move to the next operation
- When the next supplier can fit it into production
- How a delay affects the work scheduled afterward

Vertically integrated manufacturing can keep more of those operations within the same production environment. There are still schedules to manage, of course. Manufacturing hasn’t found a way around those yet. But there can be fewer outside transfers standing between one operation and the next.

### Design Changes Have a Shorter Trip

Changes happen. A dimension gets revised or a manufacturing issue calls for [another look at the design](https://blog.weberknapp.com/engineering-support-services).

When several suppliers are involved, updated information may need to travel through each company handling the affected work. With more processes under one roof, the teams responsible for those operations can communicate within the same manufacturing organization, giving that design change a much shorter trip.

### Quality Doesn’t Reset at Every Handoff

Every [manufacturing process has its own requirements](https://blog.weberknapp.com/weber-knapp-products-and-services), and quality has to be considered throughout production.

Keeping several operations within the same manufacturing organization allows those processes to operate within one quality system. Instead of a product moving between separate suppliers with their own procedures, more of its production remains within the same system of oversight.

For an OEM, that means fewer outside quality systems entering the picture as the product makes its way toward assembly.

## When Does Vertically Integrated Manufacturing Make Sense?

Not every component needs to make a grand tour of the manufacturing floor. A straightforward part that requires one or two processes may be perfectly suited to a specialized supplier.

Vertical integration becomes more relevant as the manufacturing path gets longer. Before deciding how to source a product, consider:

- How many manufacturing operations are required?
- How many outside suppliers would be involved?
- Does work need to move between suppliers before the next operation can begin?
- Could a design change affect [multiple stages of production](https://blog.weberknapp.com/full-service-manufacturing-mechanical-motion-control)?
- Will the finished product require assembly?

A product with a longer manufacturing path may be a stronger candidate for **fully integrated manufacturing**. The goal isn’t to squeeze every possible process under one roof just for the sake of it. It’s to decide where consolidating the work could make production easier to manage.

## Maybe You Don’t Need All Those Vendors

A product can pass through a lot of hands before it’s ready to ship. When several operations happen within the same manufacturing organization, there are fewer outside handoffs adding complexity along the way.

For products with a longer production path, **vertically integrated manufacturing** can keep that work better connected under one partner. It can simplify the process for the OEM while still giving each operation the attention it needs. And if the vendor spreadsheet gets a little shorter in the process, nobody is going to complain.
